Welcome!!

Dear Parents/Guardians:

Hi!  I’d like to take this time to introduce myself to you as your child’s science teacher for the 2021-2022 school year.   I have high expectations of my students to employ a devoted, creative, and responsible work ethic. With this letter, I’m including my basic rules and some basic  procedures.  During the next couple of weeks, I will be fine-tuning procedures specific to our unique year's needs and goals.  First and foremost, I want to reassure that your child's teacher is not being replaced by a computer or a computer program.  I will be here daily with your child, guiding him/her, and looking for real daily interactions with each of my students, whether the student is attending via traditional, virtual, or blended model.

About Me:

My name is Alicia Deffes (pronounced like the words “deaf” and “iss” with the accent on the first syllable), and I moved to this parish from West Baton Rouge Parish a little over 12 years ago.  I am a certified, highly qualified teacher with twenty-three years of teaching experience.

I have 3 children, and fully understand the demands of juggling work, extracurricular activities, and your child’s homework and studying.  Understanding this, I do stress that putting time into your child’s education is the most valuable gift you can give your child – It’s like putting money in the bank.   Although it’s often pretty hard to find the time to spare, remind yourself that the extra few minutes a day can make an unbelievable difference in his/her future.  I have always valued the school’s role in a community, as well as the community’s role in the school, and always encourage children to understand their importance within their community, state, country, and world.  One of our school’s goals this year is to bring the student to understand that their importance and talents have no limits.

I ask that you avidly participate in your child’s learning process.  Children who excel in school typically are children who know that their families VALUE education, and know that their families really care about how they do in school.  You are so very important, especially at this time in your child’s life, to help them develop solid routines that are centered upon being good students and citizens.

My classroom rules and tentative procedures:

  1. Aside from the allowed times, make sure you have no food/drink/candy out in my class.
  2. Correct grammar is an absolute expectation in all forms of communication. (Writing, speaking, typing)
  3. Follow instructions and only go to programs that are a part of those instructions.
  4. Let your respect for yourself and others show in your daily work.
  5. Raise your hand and wait to be called on after carefully listening to instructions if you have a question.
  6. Respect social distance standards.
  7. Remain seated until permission is given to get up.
  8. Keep your area clean. (Come in with clean hands; when on computers, refrain from touching monitor; leave your spot NEAT; leave desk straight when you leave)

Sincerely,

Mrs. Alicia Brown Deffes

Students have been made aware of this in class.

This is my procedure for recording daily conduct. Students know that if I have to remind them to get on track once, it is simply a warning, and they still have an A.
