Algebra I & Math Essentials

2020-2021

Unit

Topics

1.

Intro to Algebra and Math Essentials

What is Algebra and Math Essentials, Classroom setup, Financial Literacy Business Concepts

 2.

Relationships Between Quantities and Reasoning with Equations and their Graphs.

Use units as a way to understand problems and to guide the solution of multi-step problems; choose and interpret units consistently in formulas; choose and interpret the scale and the origin in graphs and data displays.

 3.

Linear and Exponental Functions

Use units as a way to understand problems and to guide the solution of multi- step problems; choose and interpret units consistently in formulas; and choose and interpret the scale and the origin in graphs and data displays.  Define appropriate quantities for the purpose of descriptive modeling.   Choose a level of accuracy appropriate to limitations on measurement when reporting quantities.   Create equations in two or more variables to represent relationships between quantities; graph equations on coordinate axes with labels and scales.

4.

Polynomial and Quadratic Expressions, Equations, and Functions

Use units as a way to understand problems and to guide the solution of multi-step problems; choose and interpret units consistently in formulas; choose and interpret the scale and the origin in graphs and data displays.

Define appropriate quantities for the purpose of descriptive modeling.

Choose a level of accuracy appropriate to limitations on measurement when reporting quantities.

5.

Continuation of Polynomial and Quadratic Expressions, Equations, and Functions

Use units as a way to understand problems and to guide the solution of multi-step problems; choose and interpret units consistently in formulas; choose and interpret the scale and the origin in graphs and data displays.

Define appropriate quantities for the purpose of descriptive modeling.

6.

A Synthesis of Modeling with Equations and Functions

Create equations and inequalities in one variable and use them to solve problems. Include equations arising from linear and quadratic functions, and simple rational and exponential functions.  Create equations in two or more variables to represent relationships between quantities; graph equations on coordinate axes with labels and scales.  Represent constraints by equations or inequalities, and by systems of equations and/or inequalities, and interpret solutions as viable or non-viable options in a modeling context. For example, represent inequalities describing nutritional and cost constraints on combinations of different foods.

7.

Continuation of A Synthesis of Modeling with Equations and Functions

Calculate the new balance on a charge account.  Find the finance charge by using the unpaid balance method.  Calculate the finance charge based on the average-daily-balance method where no new purchases are included.  Compute finance charge on the average-daily-balance method where new purchases are included.

Parents as Partners

At Hammond High Magnet School, all parental conferences are to be scheduled through the grade level counselor.

-          Last names A-F:     Myia Nelson

-          Last names G-M:    Loretta Evans

-          Last names N-Z:     Lisa Spriggs

All parents are encouraged to check their students’ progress daily through the parent command option.

Class Supplies: Students are required to maintain a 1” binder with tab dividers (10) for the year. This binder will contain all class work and handouts. It should remain up-to-date at all times. Students are required to complete assignments in blue or black ink, and to bring several different colored highlighters to class. Pencil is used only for drawing and math. Loose-leaf paper is required. Points off for ripped edges. If students are unprepared for class, they may borrow necessary items from the teacher at the beginning of class in exchange for their ID or other accepted “collateral” to be returned to the student at the end of class when borrowed items are returned. BOYS: Paper Towels (1 roll) & Germ X Hand Sanitizer/ GIRLS:  Kleenex (1 box) & Germ X Hand Sanitizer

Grading: Hammond High Magnet School uses a six-week grading period. The grading scale is posted in the room. You are expected to complete ALL assignments, whether present in class or not. Points earned will be written on your graded work as a fraction of what you have earned. i.e. 19/20. If only one number is written on your graded work then you have earned full credit.  Work will be returned in a timely manner. Be advised, however, teacher often cannot return work until all students have completed it.

Parish-Approved Grading Scale:

v  A 93% to 100%

v  B 85% to 92%

v  C 75% to 84%

v  D 67% to 74%

v  F 66% and below

  • Student Absences and Make-up Work: It is the student’s responsibility to complete all make-up work after an excused absence in a timely manner. If you are absent, you missed something important! You may ask a classmate or the teacher what you have missed, but NOT during instructional time. Assignments may also be found on OnCourse. Parish policy will be followed regarding make-up work. Make-up work is NOT to be done during class time. A grade of zero will be given for make-up work done during class. When accepted, late work will be graded at 50% of the points earned. Late assignments are graded and entered as time permits.

  • Lab Fee: $5.00 is due now. Please pay as directed by HHMS. This fee is used to pay for the consumable supplies needed to provide the valuable learning experiences provided by this class.

  • Communication: Parents and students are encouraged to talk to the teacher anytime they have a question or problem. We are partners all working toward the same goal – student learning success. Students may talk privately with the teacher as necessary. Parents, please email me at the address above or call the school office and leave a contact number and preferred time for a call back.

  • Cell Phones: Cell phones are not to be used during class unless specifically directed to do so by the teacher. This includes sending/receiving texts from parents. Please call the front office if you have an urgent need to reach your child. The teacher reserves the right to take phones from students without giving additional warning and turn the device in to the Discipline Office later in the day.

  • Tutoring: Tutoring and additional help is available afterschool, by appointment. Please coordinate with the teacher who is available most days after school.

  2. Have fun!
  3. Follow all school and parish rules

Consequences:

  1. Verbal Warning
  2. Parent Contact
  3. Detention & Conference with Teacher
