English I

Course Description:  The purpose of this course is to provide instruction in English language skills, which will prepare students for the future. Students will learn how to analytically read, write, and speak about literature and language.  A variety of literary genres provide the basis for reading instruction.  Composition instruction will focus on the writing of essays for various purposes and will include all phases of the writing process.  Speaking skills will center around honing the skills of effective communication on various topics.

 

Lifelong Learning Standard:  The study of language and literature will enhance students’ ability to understand what it means to be human.  As well, through our explorations, students will become better world citizens, writers, researchers, and thinkers.

 

Parents as Partners:  At Hammond High Magnet School, all parental conferences are to be scheduled through the grade level counselor.  Teachers must be notified 24 hours in advance for appointments, unless there is an emergency.  PDP students will schedule conferences through the IB Coordinator and Honors students will schedule through their school counselor.  Please the counselor page of the HHMS website to determine your specific counselor.

 

On Course Connect:  All parents are encouraged to check their students’ progress daily through On Course Connect.  This login information will be provided to the student by their first block teacher within the first weeks of school.


Teacher-Student Communication:  The preferred method of communication is Tangipahoa Parish Schools email.  Note that I can only open emails sent from your student account; if they are sent from an outside source (gmail, yahoo mail, etc.), I cannot open the email.  Parents may use an email outside of the Tangipahoa Parish School Board system to communicate with me.  Please put your child’s name in the subject line of the email.
