Academic Integrity:  Plagiarism is unacceptable.  Any student found plagiarizing a submitted assignment will receive a zero on the assignments and be recommended for review by the IB Coordinator.  To ensure academic integrity, students will submit all written assessments to turnitin.com (a plagiarism detection service).

Academic Integrity:

According to the IB, “Academic integrity is a guiding principle in education and a choice to act in a responsible way whereby others can have trust in us as individuals. It is the foundation for ethical decision-making and behavior in

the production of legitimate, authentic and honest scholarly work.” (International Baccalaureate, 2019). Students must aim to be honest and have integrity in the completion of their academic work at HHMS.  To this end, students must produce “authentic and genuine individual and group work...acknowledging the work and ideas of others” (International Baccalaureate, 2019).

The following are definitions and examples of academic malpractice as defined by IB:

  • plagiarism: this is defined as the representation of the ideas or work of another person as the student’s own (International Baccalaureate, 2019).

    • Example: Copying and pasting from the internet or rewording text from a book/internet

  • collusion: this is defined as supporting malpractice by another candidate, as in allowing work to be copied or submitted for assessment by another (International Baccalaureate, 2019).

    • Example: copying a friend’s assignment, working together with a friend on an individual assignment, and/or allowing a person who did not work on a group project to put their name on the assignment.

  • duplication of work:  this is defined as the presentation of the same work for different assessment components and/or requirements (International Baccalaureate, 2019).

    • Example: submitting a work to two different teachers.

  • academic misconduct:  any behavior that gains an unfair advantage for a student or that affects the results of another student (International Baccalaureate, 2019).

    • Example: taking unauthorized material into an exam room, misconduct during an exam, falsifying records

Classroom Malpractice policy:

  • Writing Assessments: Student will receive a ZERO on the assessment if plagiarism is detected on the FINAL DRAFT.  If plagiarism is detected prior to the final draft, students will have a mandatory conference with the teacher and the parent/ guardian will be notified in order to ensure the student has a sufficient understanding of what constitutes plagiarism in order to fix it.

  • Quizzes/Tests: If a student is caught cheating on a quiz/test, the student will receive a ZERO on the assessment and parents/guardians will be notified.

  • In Class/ Out of Class Assignments: If student(s) are found to have committed plagiarism or collusion on an assignment, the student(s) will receive a Zero on the assignment.
