COURSE DESCRIPTION:  Physical education in grades 9 and 10 are required and offers students an elective approach to physical education and sports.  A more focused approach of some sports helps students improve their skills and encourages the demonstration of competence in a variety of movement forms.

LIFELONG LEARNING STANDARD: The Physical Education Department would like ALL students to exhibit a physically active lifestyle and achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical fitness.

All parents are encouraged to check their students’ progress daily through the parent command option.

 

 

MATERIALS

  • All physical education classes will wear a mandatory uniform.  This uniform may only be purchased at HHMS.  The cost of the uniform will be announced at a later date, but  will consist of a GREY t-shirt with Hammond Tornadoes on it and PURPLE mesh shorts with an H on it.  There is an additional PE fee that is $5.00 and every PE student must pay this fee.

  • The uniform should be purchased no later than date TBA  

  • ALL classes will dress out for a grade beginning on date TBA

  • Warm-ups are allowed only in cold weather and MUST be worn over gym attire (NOT the school uniform). NO pajama pants. PE shorts must be worn over tights. PE shorts CAN NOT be worn over school pants/shorts.

  • Socks and tennis shoes will be worn during your PE hour.

  • A1 and A2  – one pack of baby wipes and one bottle of germ-x

  • A3 and B3 - two rolls of paper towels and one box of band aids

  • B1 and B2 - one pack of baby wipes and one bottle of germ-x

  • B4 - two boxes of Kleenex and one box of band aids

 

 

COURSE OUTLINE

This year students will actively participate in some and/or all of the following units: physical fitness, volleyball, flag football, table tennis, battle ball, line, ultimate frisbee, floor hockey, tether ball, bowling,   badminton, cooperative games (unit depends on teacher, weather, availability of facilities, and equipment).  



DRESSING OUT POLICIES & EXPECTATIONS

  • Students will receive credit for dressing out in the COMPLETE (correct) uniform. The complete PE uniform consists of the mandatory shirt and shorts, socks, and tennis shoes. 

  • Grades are cumulative through the semester.

  • Excuses from parent/guardian for not dressing out are NOT accepted at any time during the school year.

  • Each student must be dressed out and in their assigned area, in roll call order, sitting down within eight (8) minutes after the tardy bell.  This includes using the restroom and getting water.  Drinks are NOT allowed in the gym.  

  • At the end of class, each student will be allowed a maximum of eight (8) minutes and a minimum of four (4) minutes to dress.  Time allotted to dress in depends on class participation for the day. 

 

 

CLASS / GYM POLICIES

  • All tardiness will be enforced according to school policy. After the tardy bell rings no one will be allowed to dress out unless they have a note from an administrator. 

  • Students are not to wear street shoes on the gym floor. 

  • Students are to dress only in the locker room, NOT in the bathroom stalls.

  • All students will remain in the dressing room area until the end of the class bell rings. Students should NOT go outside, in the gym, or in the lobby area.

  • Valuables should be left in your PE locker during your class period.

  • Expect to dress out and participate EVERYDAY in PE, regardless of the weather. 

  • Book sacks, purses, or any other bags; drinks etc. are not allowed in the gym area. They are to be left in the locker room in your assigned locker.

  • The PE teachers are NOT responsible for anything that is lost or stolen in the locker room IF you don’t have your own locker and IF you don’t use your locker. Lockers are not to be shared with other students. The PE teachers will not open a locker for you if it is not yours.

  • The only time you are to be in the gym is during YOUR PE class period.  DO NOT COME TO THE GYM DURING YOUR LUNCH PERIOD.  YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO BUY DRINKS OR USE THE RESTROOM IN THE GYM.  

  • If a student is well enough to be in school he/she is generally well enough to be dressed and participate in class. Any exception to this will be handled on an individual basis. 

  • A note from a doctor is required to excuse a student due to injury or illness. The student will still be required to dress out.  A copy of the doctor’s note should be made for the PE teacher to keep on file in his/her office.  Alternate assignment will be given by each individual teacher.

  • Any student absent from school must bring a parent or Doctor’s excuse to make up points missed from being absent a day. 

  • All students shall remain in the locker room until the end of class bell rings. NO ONE is allowed to be in the hallway of the gym at any time. 

 

 

MAKE-UP POLICY: If a student is absent, he must complete a makeup work assignment.  The assignment includes the student finding one (1) fitness, health, and/or nutrition article and write a summary about the article.  The summary should be at least a paragraph (minimum of 5 sentences) in length.  The article should be stapled to the paper.  Students will have a maximum of three (3) class days to turn in the article upon returning to school.   THIS ASSIGNMENT IS FOR PAC AS WELL.



CLASS / GYM EXPECTATIONS

  • Students will show effort in all class activities.

  • Students and teachers will be involved in bell-to-bell instruction.

  • Students will display respect for themselves, teachers, substitutes, peers, and equipment.

  • Students’ safety is paramount to the department.  Due to the nature of activity, injuries can occur.  It is essential to follow directions at ALL times.  Injuries should be reported to the teacher immediately by the student so proper action can take place.

  • Students are required to wear a properly sized HHMS uniform, which consists of an HHMS t-shirt, HHMS shorts, athletic shoes, and socks during PE block.

  • Students are expected to wear uniforms everyday, even when excused from active participation.  

  • For safety reasons, no large earrings, bracelets or necklaces should be worn during PE block.

  • Absolutely no gum, food, drinks, phones, purses, backpacks, cameras, or music devices are permitted in the teaching areas.

GRADING CRITERIA

  • Grades are based on performance in the following areas:

    • Participation and dressing out = 75%

    • Students will be graded daily on a 20 point scale, criteria is as follows:

      • 20 points = dressed out correctly and participates

      • 10 points = either not dressed out or did not participate

      • 0 points = not dressed out and did not participate

      • 0 points = absent

    • Assessment (skills tests, quizzes, tests, projects) = 25%
