Hammond High Boys Basketball Coaching Philosophy

Basketball is more than a game; We believe basketball can be used as a vehicle to help develop boys into mature men. While we will work extremely hard as the coaches of the Hammond High boys basketball team to build a dominant (championship caliber) program for many years to come, we will not solely measure success on wins and losses. We will measure success on what type of men our players become once they leave this program. We do not only coach for now, we coach for the future well-being of our players. Our goal is to help develop future college graduates, faithful husbands, loving fathers, role models in society, and of course college/professional basketball players. We understand that in order for this program to be successful it will take a village. We do not believe a program can be successful with an effective support system in place. Through our program, athletes will develop skills they will use for the rest of their lives. Skills such as the ability to communicate effectively, the ability to resolve conflicts, the resolve to make smart decisions, the desire to work extremely hard, and the importance and value of commitment. We coach with three F’s in mind, (Faith, Family, and Focus).

 Family (Environment)

We believe in order for a basketball program to be successful, a family environment has to be garnered. Players do not care what you know until they know how much you care. Our players will know how much we love them (on and off the court), however, they will also know that we will hold them to a high standard and take the necessary actions needed (tough love/discipline) to make sure that standard is executed. As a family, accountability is a vital tool for success. Our basketball program will teach the players to be accountable for themselves, their actions, and to hold each other accountable. We truly define what it means to be our “brother’s keeper” by our actions on the court, in the classroom, and in the community. Being accountable is doing what you say you are going to do and doing it to the best of your ability.

Focus

In order for a program to become dominant, there is a level of laser focus that is required/mandatory for coaches and players. The coaches of this program vow to be locked in and focused on doing what’s best for our players. We cannot promise that we will make everyone else happy, but we can ensure that our focus for the well-being and positive development of our players will not change. With all that being said, we will expect the same focus from my players. We understand that there are many distractions that come with being a high school basketball player, some of which are not self-imposed. We will do my best to help diminish those distractions in order to get the best product on the basketball court. We will focus on these facets: (1)Academic excellence, (2) Maintaining a positive team culture, (3) Planned practices (4) Film study (5) Skill development and offseason development, and (6) Exposure (bringing in college/professional athletes and coaches to speak to the players)

IF YOUR SON IS NOT A BETTER MAN WHEN HE LEAVES THE HAMMOND HIGH BASKETBALL PROGRAM THEN WE HAVE FAILED!!!

THE SUCCESS OF OUR TEAM WILL TRULY BE MEASURED 3-5 YEARS LATER BY WHAT OUR PLAYERS BECOME AND HOW THEY ARE CONTRIBUTING TO SOCIETY!!!
